Marketing Tip: Networking with local businesses

Lawn signs are not only perfect for placing in someones front yard on their special day, but they also make terrific gifts for employers, their staff and coworkers!

1. Ask friends and family to hand out your marketing information to their coworkers (as long as it's permitted) or simply place your marketing materials in the office lunchroom or on office bulletin boards. Include a special coupon!

2. Offer discounts to customers who rent signs to be placed outside their office or business. Not only will they love having a discount and surprising their coworkers, but having your sign placed on commercial property is great advertising for your business.

3. Work directly with the company. We have several companies that use Sweet Greetings as their main source of gifts for their employees. When a staff member has a special occasion (new baby, birthday, wedding...) the company purchases a sign rental for their employee. Sometimes they have it delivered to the employees home and sometimes they have it placed outside the business itself. Either way, helping employers celebrate their staff builds great business relationships. It feels good to receive a personalized sign and feels extra good coming from an employer who appreciates their employees. Signs also make great gifts for the boss! Don't forget Boss's day and his/her birthday!

4. Offer your signs for local business promotions: grand openings, sales, store events and more!

5. Network with local party planners and party entertainers (clowns, fairy's, magicians...).

6. Work with local real estate agents (many agents offer the new homeowners a gift). Not only is it awesome to see the 'SOLD' sign in front of the home you just purchased, but seeing a beautiful lawn display saying 'Welcome HOME' is an added bonus for the homeowner as well as the agent... and you!

I thought it would be fun to highlight some of our non-traditional rentals. We all know that storks are for babies and our graduation owl is for grads etc., but our signs are so versatile that they can actually be used in SO many unique ways!

For instance, cakes are not just for birthdays! We eat cake to celebrate countless occasions and our cake signs are used for countless occasions as well. This week we did a cake rental to congratulate a local customer on "taking the cake" for being named one of the top dentists in the country! What a special way to announce this extraordinary moment!

Another really great rental was when our customer requested our cowboy sign to celebrate a 60th birthday! Our adorable signs are great for the young as well as the young at heart. Life is to short for boring gifts - give the gift of pure joy! That's one of the best parts of owning this business. I love helping others celebrate in a fun way!

"I wish I would of done this sooner"! That's what I've said since choosing "Sweet Greetings" to start my home-based business renting storks.

I live near (and offer my storks) in the town where the "Yard Storks" began. I've never been worried about competing with one of the most recognized stork companies w/ franchises nationwide. I knew right away my storks were going to do well since they're an "updated" looking stork, brightly colored & I have found no others out there close to them! AT ALL! I searched (and I still look out of curiousity) to see if I could find any others that I would want to claim as mine! One. Only one other company did I find and it's in Canada (Sweet Greetings has still been my best choice)! I know I might sound biased, maybe I'm too picky, but I wanted something that looks classy, but yet cute for the purpose it's for! I didn't like the ones that look airbrushed, or like they were cut in the high school wood shop.

When I opened up my storks after they arrived I was so pleased & excited about offering these guys! I am just glad that I was first in my area to get hold of these storks & claim my territory! I hope to be going strong in 5 years & re-up for the same areas again!

Carrie has been there for me from problems I ran into w/ the posts (nothing major!) to helping me with ideas to get some free advertising (and it worked!). I've never had a problem getting an answer to my questions when I asked & it's always in a timely manner at that!

I hope I don't sound like an infomercial. I'm here on my own freewill posting because I'm happy with my choices that I've made for my home business.

It seems as if random emails are getting kicked back and I am not receiving them. I would hate to miss an email or have someone think that I did not reply. Hello to all my readers. As you all know, I am the owner of Sweet Greetings and I dedicate a huge chunk of my life to renting lawn signs and helping others start their own business. What many of you don't know is that I am a mom to 3 young boys - one of which has a severe social anxiety disordered called Selective Mutism (SM). Children with SM are normal, smart, outgoing kids at home, but when they leave the safety of their home they go mute. They are silent, they do not make eye contact and they go blank-faced. My son is 7 years old and has never once spoken to any of the other children at school (not in preschool, kindergarten, first or second grade). He speaks non-stop at home, but goes mute in most other settings. 7/1000 children have SM (it's just as common as Autism) and yet there is not very much awareness about it. That's when I decided to take on another major project in my life....

Inexpensive way to market your biz!

I often have booths at baby and children expos advertising my business. Most of the booths have some sort of goody that they give away (custom magnets, pens, cups etc.) . These goodies can get very expensive when you have a few thousand people passing your booth. A good friend of mine who owns love2bcreative.com showed me a wonderful inexpensive item to give away at expos or to include in a goody bag to give your customers.

Simply purchase a bag of wooden clothes pins, design and print out custom labels, apply them to the clothes pins and if you'd like, add a magnet to the back! Ta-da... an awesome custom 'chip clip' and/or magnet! Customers can seal a bag of chips with it or hang it on their fridge! You can either print the label out on regular paper and attach it with a glue stick or you can print the labels on sticker paper for easier application. A great, unique, inexpensive item to promote your business!

What should I put in my goody bags?

Most people who deliver lawn signs will also include a free goody bag to their customer. I often get asked "What should I put in it?".

Today I will discuss a few great items to include with a stork rental. Some of these items can also go in the bday bags, but today I will focus on newborn announcements. One of the main reasons to supply a goody bag is to promote your business. Provide items that will make you memorable and that include your contact information so that customers can easily find you again when they want to rent a sign in the future. Providing a nearly empty bag with only your items may not be as impressive as a bag full of goodies!

1. Free sample candy bar - If you have purchased our candy bar business cd you will have access to a wide variety of wonderful personalized candy bar designs. If your customer does not order candy bars, it's nice to include 1 sample candy bar to peak their interest. It's nice because they get a free personalized candy bar with their new baby's birth info on it and you will often find customer who will love it so much that they place a full order.

2. Your brochure, business card and/or magnet - You'll want to make sure that your customer can easily remember you the next time they know someone having a baby or birthday. By providing your marketing materials, especially magnets, they can keep your info handy very easily.

3. Frequent Renters Cards - You wont want your customers to simply rent one sign and then move on to other gifts for future birthdays, new births and other occasions. Let them know how much you appreciate their continued business. Offer your customers a free rental after 4 rentals. This is the perfect item to give to your customers who rent signs from you as well as your customers who receives signs as gifts. 5. 'Back To Sleep' campaign items - Help prevent SIDS by promoting the Back to Sleep campaign which suggests placing babies on their backs to sleep. This organization is very near and dear to my heart after experiencing a near death experience with our newborn son a few years ago. Thanks to early intervention and CPR, our 4 day old baby's life was saved and I feel that it's important to promote newborn sleep safety. 6. Info on other baby Items - If you offer any other baby-related items, it's good to advertise them in your goody bags. I am an affiliate for the iseeme.com books and I include a 'free shipping' code and information on the books in my goody bags.

7. Items from local businesses - It's great to network with local businesses and help to promote each other. If you have your brochures in local businesses, it's nice to offer to place their marketing materials in your bags: coupons, discounts, catalogs, free items etc. Contact local businesses as well as local independant sales reps for such items as Mary Kay (what new mom wouldn't love a Mary Kay sample!). It's especially nice if they include some sort of 'gift' with their marketing materials. Even simple things like lollypops, coupons, magnets, chip clips, samples etc.. so that the customer is excited to recieve the freebies and doesn't feel like they are being given a bag of ads.

8. Scour the internet for freebies - Just like with American Baby and the Back to Sleep campaign, many business love to give out free samples to promote their businesses. A goody bag full of great items is a great way to make your business memorable. Depending on the item, you can also include a sticker on the freebies that say "Compliments of your business name"

I absolutely love when I get to meet my business partners in person and get to put a face to the voice that I've gotten to know so well over the phone. Today I got the pleasure of meeting Janet Lewin from j-nstorkworld.com who drove down from Stanton Island, New York to Pennsylvania to pick up some more signs.

We got to chat about the business and share ideas (she even gave me a great idea about organizing a binder of photos to take with me when promoting my signs!). I wish our visit could have been longer, but I was thrilled to have gotten to meet her and her significant other, Ferdinando.
